Can anyone help? I know nothing about aircraft but there must be someone out there who does! My mother in law (aged 95) showed me a photograph of a flying boat – marked on the fuselage S1535 – which she took as a young girl, at Southsea, near Portsmouth, UK. It is seen floating near the beach. She could not remember anything more about it except being part of a huge crowd of people watching it land. I went onto internet and found that it could well be a photo of the winner of the Schneider Trophy in 1929 or 1931, but the number on the side did not tally with the descriptions. It could perhaps of been the winner of the 1927 race (which was held in Venice) returning to England. The 1929 and 1931 races were held in the Solent so she would have been well placed at Southsea to view it. When I mentioned the Schneider Trophy she said that was right.
Thanks for any help!

Does it look like this Fairey IIIF (the one with the floats)?

It has the number 716 on fuselage under cockpit and S1535 towards the tail. It’s a biplane, single engine and floating on sea. still trying to download at the photo!

For Fairey IIIF Mk IIIB S1535 it will be around 1931.
Delivered to FAA Pool Gosport 30/1/1931. Makers at Hamble to 443Flt Lee On Solent for Battle Cruiser Sqn, for HMS Hood, ’97’ 30/5/31. To 444Flt for Battle Cruiser Sqn on HMS Hood ‘716’, 1/32. Damaged (probably beyond repair?) on catapult, disembarked 14-15/3/32.
From Fleet Air Arm Aircraft, Units and Ships 1920 to 1939 (Air Britain).
Does it have 97 on the side?

Here is a clue. Copy your photo to Photobucket or similar and then upload.

Thanks. Would appreciate instructions to post photo! Not particularly computer savvy! Tried using “Image” icon, but upload failed.

Perhaps, Chrisrbratt, you could post the photograph. That’s likely to produce a positive identification of the aircraft illustrated.

S 1595 was the winning S.6B in 1931, perhaps the O.P. has mistyped?! Anyway, welcome to the Forum!

S1535 was the serial of a Fairey IIIF.
