Pole mounted (real) Mustang…new photos

I was in the U.S. Midwest two weeks ago and stopped at Volks Field, operated by the Wisconsin Air National Guard for training.

It’s long been famous for having one of the few real Mustangs still on outside display. It’s been up there since Mustangs were retired from the ANG…circa 1957.
As you can see, it’s in fine shape.
Several visiting service members were looking it over so it gets lots of attention. The base also features, F-102A and rare TF-102 in WI ANG colors (nice to see a pair together), a F-86, F-84F all on poles. Newer ground exhibits include an A-7 and A-10…which was being painted when I was there.

Also, further away from the main gate is a KC-97 that needs some TLC, as well as some artillery pieces and a UH-1H and AH-1 Huey Cobra.

All seem to be in good shape despite the area’s harsh winters and thunderstorm filled summers.

If any of you Mustang fans would like a full size copy of the photos for you files, PM me.

Sorry to say but that is the most awful way to mount an aircraft. Cheaper than a curvacious single stand but bloody unsightly to say the least. It would have been kinder to leave the ‘Tang on it’s wheels.
