RAFM Hendon ~ 12Aug14

Nothing special but during my trip down to the big city earlier in the week, I spent a couple of hours at Hendon to try out the ‘High ISO Multi-Frame Noise Reduction’ facility on the Sony A7 CSC just to check the picture quality using a Full Frame sensor rather than the a cropped sensor that I usually use on the Sony Alpha SLT’s. All hand held and on some of these I should have reduced the aperture for better depth of field and increased the ISO for a longer shutter speed.

Regards the Spitfire going to Brazil -it went to the collection of an airline owner. That airline was looking at a big purchase of aircraft with ‘RR’ on the cowlings !

And they were choosing between R-R and P&W for their engines, hence the nice shiny formerly-airworthy birdcage Corsair parked alongside the Spitfire IX in the same museum.

And who do you think bought the MATS Connie and donated it to the Koreans? P&W again, of course!

wasn’t the Eurofighter Typhoon originally in the running to replace the Canadian F-18 Hornets?

You think that the Royal Omani Air Force is possibly slightly overrepresented at the moment having thee aircraft in their markings at the RAFM ?? It would be nice though if they could find a surplus Skyvan and donate it to the Ulster Aviation Society.

Seen a few odd things going on over the years…RR donating MkIX Spitfire to Brazil, vintage static and flying aircraft travelling to Middle East…not that I’m against it mind, just looks unusual.

As always, great photos Brian.

This exhibition, sponsored by BAE Systems, seems to be purely about politics.

“It is a relationship that continues to develop into the 21st Century with the Royal Air Force of Oman’s purchase of the Eurofighter Typhoon from BAE Systems.”

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/whats-going-on/events/enduring-relationship-a-history-of-the-royal-air/

Still, if it is the quid pro quo for BAE forking out for the Grahame White Factory reorganization, I for one won’t be complaining too much.

Would hardly describe the SAL Pioneer and Piston Provost as Milestones of Flight, but then perhaps the markings say it all.
Must admit I thought the Pioneer had been quickly and quietly put back into British markings though after it’s brief sojourn for refubishment ( with an original intent of it going on loan to the Middle East) in the MBCC at Cosford

Does remind me that “Storm Front” by Rowland White is a cracking read though………………..

When did the Pioneer get a repaint and move to Hendon?

Thanks for posting those, Brian – some interesting shots there and nice results quality-wise.

I really must get down to Hendon as there are quite a few aircraft I’ve not yet seen in the flesh – especially some of the German ones.

Thanks for taking the time to post them!
