Hi all, thanks for letting me join the forum, my interest is linked though metal detecting,
Can’t say to much about the site for obvious reasons, sorry, but have found this ID plate, I have been searching the internet and have only found one reference that it may be off a Supermarine Spitfire ? Apparently the plates are quite common, but the numbers reference to various modifications and can help pinpoint the plate..
I have seen one on the internet also stamped spitfire, any help or thoughts welcome
76mm x 38mm, copper alloy. Number on back is 30064 325
Under ALT = 229 then I ? 5
Someone has told me
6s makes it a Mark VII Supermarine
and
GAL seems to stand for General Aircraft Limited

Mod 229 just refers to ‘alter identification marks’
Iintroduced on Mk I Spitfires on 21 May 1940
………………………………………………………………………
105 engine introduce Galley type radiator 17/07/1939 I
125 paint nat.marking & serial:SIS4, delete a/c-No from Wing 05/09/1939 I
135 equipment introduce station keeping lights 20/03/1940 I
155 armament strengthen pilot’s rear bulkhead 10/11/1939 I
195 control strengthen wing flaps 14/02/1940 I
Flaps are the most likely parts to be sub-contracted out from the above.

This is a modification plate of a Supermarine (6S) assembly subcontracted out to General Aircraft Ltd (GAL).
if you can confirm any of the three digit mod numbers in the boxes the mod list can be consulted to indicate where the part was located on the Spitfire
