Pilatus P2

I just looked through the recent Meier Motors thread and saw the photo of the less than fortunate Pilatus P2 that used to be the “bad guy” at North Weald’s Fighter Meet in the 80s. This just made me wonder how many Pilatus P2’s fly in Europe these days? There used to be a pair that demolished plywood aircraft at North Weald back then, as well as a couple flying in France. However, during my visits to La Ferte Alais there hasn’t been any P2 flying there. A number flew in Switzerland (naturally) but I really haven’t paid much attention to what happen’s there.

Anyone…?

Glad to see that some still fly. Thanks for the input.

…or as an American friend of mine would say, “A Taylorcraft built in an anvil factory”

They don’t call it the “The All Steel Aeroplane” for nothing!

… and the modified F-AZCE still flies from La Ferte Alais.

G-BJAX during happier times.

I think it was Jersey air show 1986. The late John Watts on the wing, strapping one of the ‘Reds’ in the back, before going off for a Jolly.

The other one in the US is Shawn Mulligan’s. It is one of the pair that played a ‘German fighter’ in one of the Indiana Jones movies, and still had the fake guns above the nose when he got it. It used to be kept at Schellville, but I believe he moved on from there a couple of years back. Shawn was doing some really nice work on it the last time I saw it.

I remember we boxed up an absolutely immaculate Swiss-registered one at Duxford in about 1987 or so and shipped it to the US. In wonder what became of that one.

Mike, the Swiss registered one was i believe U-138. It came to EL Paso , was assembled and certified, but did not fly often. a couple of years ago, i was hired to drive to EL Paso and disassemble it for shipping to Germany. At that time, we were 2/3 done with the Planes of Fame one, and had tools and jigs to help. It is in Germany, and last time i talked to the owner, he had not begun the process of putting it back together. Shawn’s plane is close, just waiting on final engine work.

The Pilatus G-BLKZ was effectively written off because the owner tried to save her with a wheels down landing. Unfortuately the field wasn’t up to it ! Vandals during the night smashed some instrument faces and started a very minor fire. Much to the owner’s regret he wasn’t in a postion to try and safeguard her overnight.

Hello All,
i just delivered N5241M ( Ex G-BONE) to the Planes of Fame in Chino for their airshow this past may. This is currently the only flying P2 in the US, and there is one more in Santa Rosa that is just waiting on completion of engine overhaul work and then it will be flying. There are no other projects in the US, the last 2 both went to Germany i believe, one that was in El Paso ( U-138), and the Ex Kermit Weeks machine.
here is a shot of the photo shoot from the Chino show.

An even sadder end for G-BLKZ. Torched by vandals whilst in a field after a forced landing, and subsequently broken up and parted out. 🙁

The type is extinct in the UK now, the last one (G-PTWO) moving on to Czech a couple of years back.

G-BONE went to the US a decade ago, and has recently been restored in Texas for Planes of Fame.

All the rest have either been sold on or wrecked.
