dark light

old RAF aircraft radio valves & things any ideas?

hi, I wonder if anyone can identify the use and era of these ‘things’. Not sure what the grey box things are, the dark ones have stencilling which may help identify them, the light grey one is stamped ‘8MFD, 600V D.C WKG (71C)10C/13271’. The valves are of varying sizes and some have the remains of stencils on & broad arrows ie broad arrow LC,CV2127 KB/FD6CH6 and another has 12A17 . the £1 coin is for scale.

Any thoughts?

many thanks, Dave

The 6CH6 valve is a video amplifier, possibly used in an oscilloscope. (NB: Not video as in modern parlance!).
The capacitors are non-electrolytic types with relatively high capacitance and are oil filled – DO NOT be tempted to break them open!

Valves are still used a lot in guitar amplification due to the predictable way they distort. I remember when one of the Mach 3 Soviet era aircraft was delivered by a defector, western boffins laughed at the fact it had valve circuitry. It was only when they realised that a valve will not blow in a nuclear flash and a transistor/ic will they realised that them damn Ruskies seemed to know what they were doing. Some of the best valves (or vacuum tubes if you are in the US) are made by Soldano in Russia.

MFD is ‘microFarad’ which is a measure of capacitance – in modern parlance now abbreviated to uF and much smaller physically. Valves could be anything really and I haven’t done anything with valves for at least 20 years, but they are now getting quite rare and I’ll bet most kids wouldn’t be able to identify what they were.

Interestingly, valve amplifiers for hi-fi have had a bit of a revival because they sound much ‘warmer’ and true.

Era – well, probably early 50’s through the 60’s (perhaps into the 70’s too) judging by the size as these are considered miniature valves compared to the Goliaths used in the 30’s and 40’s. Nice to see the name ‘BRIMAR’ again too…. 🙂

The CV2127 is a video output pentode for TV and Radar. Can’t really make out the others.

The grey boxes are capacitors for what equipment I have no idea.
