Ammo Tracking

I dug this bit up at Silloth and was told at the time that it was 303 racking.

I have another section that was damaged at both ends.

It has stamps 110408 at either end.

The shown inert 303 does move down the rack.

Can anyone tell me where they were used – turrets, wings ??

Cant see any pics of it in use in my British Aircraft Armament books.

Thanks

Presumably you were expecting to find something aeronautical then, Brian, judging by the size of the digging party?

Yes Mike – some bits visible in the picture .. We only found P51, Catalina, Oxford, T6, B17,B25, Lancaster, Miles Magister and a few other aircraft pieces..

Thanks for the pics Chumpy!

Looks very much like Lanc ammo tracking, feeds the tail turret from ammo bins mid way along the fuselage.

Way back when …circa 1998, Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight manufactured a set of these for the BBMF Lanc. Luckily we had pattern items from the Hendon museum example..a whole lot of fun to make the mulitude of mounting brackets, and to get the stainless steel sections formed and fitted together, especially the ‘twisty sections’!

The whole thing when put together was about 20ft long, ( 1each side port & stbd).. alas we had to give the belts of inert rounds back!

There’s Merlin Pete, too (on the right for those who don’t know what he looks like).

Silloth, that brings back memories, little TonyT playing in the sand dunes and staying at the Lido.

Tony the dig was slightly less romantic and the sand not quite so good for sandcastles.

It was the local tip.

Yes that is 303 ammo track or one side of a section of it. The first picture is how the bullets run through it not the second one.. These are fitted inside the fuselage. Most likely Lanc?
