New 2014 Memorial to crew of Halifax DT556 76 Squadron – Belgium

Hi all,

Thought some of you might be interested to learn of our new memorial to the crew of 76 Squadron Halifax DT556 which was shot down on 2nd March 1943 crashing near Gootrees, Kasterlee in Belgium, 5 of the crew lost their lives, one evaded and 2 were taken PoW.

On Saturday 21st June 2014 a large number of local people and reprentatives from the local community gathered at the spot to remember those young crews who lost their lives. Memembers from two of thew crew (Sgt. Trinder & P.O. Stanley RCAF) were present to witness the unvieling. After the last post was played by a buglar 3 piper cubs made a low and slow flypast over the crash site. On the Sunday we took the family to visit the graves of their loved ones at Schonselhof, I personally have never seen so much emotion from the families, it brought a lump to my throat. More info and full history on our website.
