All,
What’s the general consensus on the correct type of BA nuts and machine screwes for use in fixing instruments, switches, etc. into wartime cockpits?
It seem’s slotted round-head or countersunk is the norm depending on the application but some places I’ve read that they should brass, other places that they should be steel. Likewise, I’ve noticed that on BFPs they tend to be black – are the heads just painted?

The Whitley used aluminium instrument screws, Spitfire I used stainless.

Thanks chaps.
Seeing as I can’t get alloy I’ll go with brass so they at least look silver and make a mental note about the brass near the compass 🙂

A look through my schedules of spare parts seem to indicate mainly screws of part numbers starting with A32, A33, A40, A44, A45, A205, A208; so brass or steel mainly round head but countersunk sometimes.
Brass near compasses of course!
Check the Schedule of Spare Parts (“Volume 3”) or Illustrated Parts Catalogue (the AP topic -3), if you can find one of course!

Brass or alloy.
