If I’m reading the stories correctly, the POW Medal is only being awarded to the 160 US airmen who were held at the Wauwillermoos Prison Camp, where conditions were especially hard.
I’ve only heard about American internees in Switzerland.
Did the RAF issue instructions to pilots to make for Switzerland if their a/c were disabled? Anyone know how many RAF crewmembers were interned there?

The news items linked goes out of its way not to say anything controversial and mentions nothing about the Swiss treatment of the airmen.
I’d always assumed that the Swiss treated the airmen the way the Swedes did (i.e. no one shooting at you and plenty of blondes 🙂 ) but the book painted a very different picture.

The book Masters of the Air about the 8th AF has some very negative reports on the treatment of allied POWs by the Swiss.
It says they weren’t treated well and many Swiss were Nazi (or at least German) sympathizers.
