Hi All,
I wonder if anyone can help with this please. I’m trying to make the stencil for the oil tank markings but the info I’ve got is incomplete.
I know it’s “Oil capacity 61/2 galls & Air space 21/2 galls” but there are 2 lines which I don’t have the complete info for, these are ???????? – 270 Summer & ???????? – 170 Winter.
Anybody have any ideas etc.
Kind regards
Nigel (owner Sea King XV677)

Might be detergent oil, though not sure If they were using detergent oils in radials of the time

Further to what Tony posted – could be OMD – 270 etc.
I have certainly used OMD – 370 (Chippie)
and OMD – 160 (Bulldog)
Hey but I was a Rigger and (even now) only reluctantly touch those enginey things LOL
Edit – and looking at Tony’s link – looks like it would be OM ; )

Nigel, best guess is it will be either use OM which is shorthand for Oil Mineral or Oil Mineral itself. As OM-170 and OM-270 were / are engine piston oil grades.. They relate to SAE 40 and SAE 50 Civi oil specs and you’d want a thinner oil for winter running..
