Dear Forum ,
I know many Varsity types are scrapped with some in museums .
I remember one at the fire dump in the grounds of Bristol air port many years ago. I know this might seem a silly question to some , but are cockpit parts from this type reasonably easy to locate , ie , flight panels , yokes , rudder pedals , seats etc .. And has anyone ever built up/ restored a panel and parts from this type of aircraft . It’s one of the oldest types I can remember seeing fly from Bristol airport when I was a kid in the 1980s , it can’t have been much longer after that that they came out of service , but I remember the Viking on short haul flights , I got boxes of relics , books a models , and military stuff that I want to move on , or I should say my good lady wants it gone , but doesn’t mind myself having a small project , hence my wondering how hard it is to find a panel from that type . Any advice would be gladly received

Merkle,
If you are looking for a project at the recent aerojumble in Shoreham the Gatwick aviation museum had a couple of empty instrument panels for sale, one was either a Wessex or Sea king (cannot remember which now) the other was a Whirlwind helicopter which they didn’t have the room to display and remained in the car. Having previously restored a whirlwind panel I can recommend this type. Good long panel which holds a wide variety of cold war instruments and almost all easy to obtain with a bit of time. One of the few panels where you will find pilots and co pilots flight instrument positions, engine and fuel system instruments all in the centre. Quite an interesting project in the scheme of panel collecting. With all the instruments in place it becomes pretty impressive and very heavy! Give them a call if you are interested they may still have either of them.

there was a Varsity yoke at Shoreham on Saturday on one of the outside stalls. Think the chap wanted £250 for it. No idea if that was a good price or not but it was a nice looking piece.

I wish I had bought or acquired parts from the fire dump varsity at Bristol when I had a chance , being its one that was Allways there for years that I used to see regularly when I looked across the airport whenever I used to visit or take a flight for holiday

Ian , I guess your right , the heady days of the mid 90s are long gone , I just posed the question as it seemed to be of a type not as coveted like say EE Lightning parts . And as such wondered if parts from aircraft not as popular as fighters etc Idid wonder if parts were easier to locate , with prices that are not sky high , I will keep my nose to the ground and keep searching I’ve got a few British instruments to start with , and just keep looking , the thing I like about the varsity and Viking etc is that they were used in civilian and RAF service in the 1950s / 60s for me the golden age of aviation 🙂 , thanks for your helpful information runway , you’ve convinced me to keep on track , it might even pay to look at other countries that used these types , as there might be parts to be found there 🙂

There is an aerojumble store at Bruntingthorpe open days who sell a complete set of Varsity pilots panels with instruments etc. I’ve seen them for sale for the last couple of seasons, not sure if they have currently sold though.

The best way is to keep an eye out and see what comes along. Looking for a particular project will only lead to disappointment. Newark fest is coming up!
