I have read the whole F.T. article by now, it says that LH will ask Boeing and Airbus for offers. But demands from both Airbus and Boeing that they have offer a more modernised version of the 737 or A320 Family.
So if you remember the thread in which Boeing announces that some of the developments of the 7E7 will go into the 737s, it is easier for Boeing to do that because of its work on the 7E7 then Airbus with its work on the A380.
