Edmund 'Ed' Miller G.Av.A RIP

It is with deep sadness I have to report the passing of Edmund ‘Ed’ Miller last evening. Ed was a past chairman of the Guild of Aviation Artists and incredibly talented painter. Ed has done a number of covers for me, and commissions for many others in the aviation and publishing industry. Ed used to work at DH Hatfield and also used to teach at the local college.

He will be sadly missed.

@Firebird.   Just joined the forum and saw the post re Edmund’s Queen’ Jubilee’s paintings.  Not sure that you will see this 6 years later! – but just in case…   I commissioned Ed to paint these while working at British Airways.  They were as you say to commemorate the Queens Jubilee. Ed was brilliant to work with and I remember well my first meeting with him to discuss the prints at Hatfield when he showed me over a Chinese Trident.  We offered them for sale and the originals paintings were put in the British Airways Board Room.

I liked, and will miss his style of ‘Portmanteau’ works and my particular favourite of that genre ‘the early days at Ringway’.
Another of his works used to hang in the Museum at Middle Wallop showing the Battle of Britain raid by FW Condors (Did that actually happen?).

That is correct, they were a BA commission. Ed also did a lot of paintings for book covers for Peter Clegg’s series of Scottish aviation pioneers, many of which have been presented to and hang in a lot of the Scottish airports. The did a number of paintings for book dustjackets for me, including my own ‘Spirit of Dan-Air’. His work has appeared in the forum here, mainly in conjunction with the Mike Russell thread. He regularly displayed at the Guild of Aviation Art summer exhibition.

Edmund Miller was the artist of a set of commercial aviation paintings turned into a set of ltd edtion prints that I have, that I’ve been unable to find anything about for years.

They represent 4 different BEA/BOAC/BA aircraft used by HM Queen on royal visits and I think were commissioned by BA around the time of the Queens Jubilee in 1977. I inherited them from an aunt, and I think they were a retirement gift to my uncle when he retired from BA around 1977-78.

Can’t find anything definate about them though other than Edmund Miller painted the original paintings.
