75(NZ) Squadron RAF – Norfolk shows how to create a proper memorial

Feltwell was the base for 75 (NZ) Squadron from 1940 through to late 1942, basing its Wellingtons on the grass field, until the conversion to Stirlings and a move to Mildenhall. It was from here that Sergeant Pilot JR Ward, RNZAF flew on 7th July 1941, to win his Victoria Cross.

The village has a CWGC, and a dedicated memorial, but at last something has been done to create a proper memorial, one that I am sure the WW2 crews would approve of heartily.

I give you the renamed ‘Wine Lodge’ – now The Wellington

Some bits of memorabilia scattered around, real ale, good food at decent prices. Should you be passing through don’t hesitate to drop in.

Thanks for this info everyone! Great to see.
Nice touch with the Nelsonian hops. Nelson, at the top of the South Island, is the primary hop-growing area in NZ. If you visit for the Omaka airshow (over the hill from Nelson), be sure to sample the Renaissance Brewing products available on-site.

And the next step from the lovely folk at The Wellington – Their own ale.

The really great thing is that following the 75 Sqd theme, the hops that went into it are imported from New Zealand.

I had a pint last night and it is a good ale

So I had another

And then another

And then one more for luck.

The pub sign in question dates from about the early 1960s, T-21. So it makes sense!

The legend was that it was named after a Wellington that crashed just offshore, but the only crash I’m aware of at that location is a Whitley. There was a Wellington a few miles eastwards, at Fairlight, where a tyre was recently found on the beach.

This pub was re-named the Smugglers, but has since closed. I tried to get the old ‘Wellington’ pub sign, but was too late.

Just found the photo of the ‘Wellington’ pub sign that was once on Hastings seafront. Now long gone.

I thought my memory wasn’t playing me tricks, and by coincidence the same ‘AA’ codes.

Thinking about it, I am sure the early Airfix Wellington box art showed an AA coded aircraft. I rather suspect, given the period of this painting, that the pub sign artist drew his inspiration from the Airfix box lid.

We visited on Friday for a meal – it is in walking distance from our home.

There are some rough edges, but they deserve support.

The food was delicious, the staff enthusiastic, if a little under experienced. But I am sure that time will tell and they will make it a venue to be proud of for all of us who want the memory of Bomber Command maintained.

There’s a number of aviation-themed pubs I know of – One in Steeple Morden, there used to be one in Polebrook, the Goddard Arms Aviation Pub, in Clyffe Pypard… there most be LOADS of them around!

I was able to make my first visit today
The Wellington has a growing collection of aviation memorabilia.
It’s already a very nice tribute to 75 Squadron and everyone who flew from Feltwell…and it’s also a very nice pub whether you like aircraft and wartime memorabilia or not.
There was a good crowd there today, maybe boosted by the opportunity to watch the England V Wales rugby match, but I hope in achieves the long term success it deserves.
I wish it was my local!

Interestingly, that is very similar to the pub sign that used to hang outside The Wellington pub on Hastings seafront. I think even the same code letters.

Should be more of it.

Can’t say I’ve come across an aviation-themed pub in Australia. Happy to be told one (or more!) exists though.
