More Mystery bits: Spit, Mustang Whitley?

Hope someone can help… The knob is from an early RAF Mustang, recovered by WWIG in the eighties and recently rescued from my aunt’s store of useful bits for bike repairs. The pull handle was described on a popular on line auction site as Tempest. Did Armstrong Whitworth sub contract on Tempests? as it has two AW stamps: AW4247 and another with indistinct digits. Whitley? The bent black painted Spit bit was recovered in the early eighties from a Mk XIV which killed the unfortunate Mrs Steenkamp, ATA, in Worcestershire. It looks like a cover but I’ve not found out from what. Entirely stumped.

Thanks Elliott, that is unusual. Having not dug it up myself it could easily find a new home! Cheers for looking.

Hi Ian – your pull lever is almost certainly Albemarle. I’d be interested in it if you would let it go?

The Mustang was allegedly AG634, 414 Sqn RCAF, so unfortunately no Bottisham connection. Here are a couple of photos lifted from the Osprey ‘Production line to frontline’ P51 book. The end of the pump is poking out next to the seat, as Tony said.

Ian,

Meant to ask have you an ID for the Mustang – just wondering if its ex-Bottisham as Bottisham was the home to RAF Mustangs before the USAAF moved in.

Cheers

Tony,

I can find no record of any P-51D carrying a hyd hand pump? We have one in the museum from the P-51B Impatient Virgin.

Can you flick my over any documentation you have that shows this in a D.

Thanks

Jason

Nice early hyd hand pump there Ian. They were phased out on the later D models. The pump went on the right (starboard side) of the seat. I have one for my P51D

Cheers Tony, that explains perfectly. A small but important piece! Being an early Mustang some odd bits came out:

Jason is (obviously) correct. the unit was a clamp that sat at the bottom of the stick. The knob went into the unit. Your knob and the unit was red to show that it was obviously set. It would have been found during full and free checks if accidentally set.
The shots below show it – bizarrely or brilliantly – remove a P51 fuz and the column stays on one piece wing!

Thanks for looking that up Jason, I haven’t got the parts list and it’s a bit small to jump out from photos. Cheers.
Whitley was a wild stab in the dark Elliott, but thanks for the offer of a peek. It looks a bit chunky for a pre war part. Any idea on the Spit bit?

The knob is from a Mustang 73-52150 is the knob for the elevator and aileron control lock according to my parts list. We at the Bottisham Airfield Museum would love to give this a good home if it needs one!

Cheers

Jason
