Good evening all,
My father in law has asked me to look in to the service record of his late father. I’m quite enjoying digging around the internet looking at old pictures and doing some old fashioned investigating.
At the moment, all I have to go on is his service record that I recently received from the disclosures department at RAF Cranwell.
He joined the RAF in May 1938 as an airman before taking his commission in October 1944. He finally left the RAF in August 1947, returning to his pre-war occupation as a chartered accountant. During his time in the RAF he served as a W.Op/AG which I have found out was a wireless operator and air gunner. From chatting to my father in law I believe most of this time was spent serving on the Lancaster.
After spending time at various OTU’s, he was posted to 49 Sqn, 189 Sqn and 97 Sqn before being posted to 242 Sqn and 246 Sqn after the war.
He was awarded the DFC at some point and this was mentioned in the London Gazette in December 1945.
Can anyone tell me the best way to find out why he received the DFC or if there is a citation available to view? I’m also interested in hearing any useful tips or information on searching and getting the best out of the web on this subject.
I’ve posted pictures of what I received from Cranwell below if it helps.
Looking forward to hearing from some of you soon.

Hi Martin,
Go straight to the London Gazette with his name/number etc, a quick search pulled this:
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/1939-03-15;1948-12-31/exact=Polland;event=world-war-ii/start=1
This gives a starting point and there should be a citation, hopefully! If not, try Jonathan Collins (I have used his services several times) at: http://www.militaryresearchon.com/
