38+48 has now been allocated her UK military serial number ZK848. Lets hope that Hunter aviation get some MOD contracts and she gets some airtime.

There was a rumour that she may have some contract work in Germany

Sorry to revive an old thread but I got back from a business trip today and found my latest copy of AFM on the doorstep matt. As I was idly flicking through the news brief on page 8 caught my eye. 38+48 has now been allocated her UK military serial number ZK848. Lets hope that Hunter aviation get some MOD contracts and she gets some airtime.

I wonder if there are any Phantom drivers and back seaters knocking on Hunters door saying “Give us a job pleeeeeaaaaasssseeeeee”!

One thing I bet the makers of Phantom Phinale never imagined that there would ever be a Phantom back flying with a UK military serial, I say they should make another one. I even have a title, considering the new film out on Thursday from a Galaxy far far away how about “Phantom Phinale, The Phorce Awakens” 😉

Anyone close to Tangmere to have a look and see if XV408 is still there?

It would be easier for BAe Systems to operate a couple of Tornados under contract. They already have aircrew and the Tornado could fullfill pretty much anything a Phantom can do.

BAe also recently had access to a buttload of Phantoms. They convert them into drones at Mojave in the US for target practice.

Maybe they’re planning to fly it off the new carriers in case F-35 continues to go t!ts-up!

Sorry for dumb question 🙁 What use would a F4F be to the MOD anyway? (if thats what its for) Supersonic targeting aircraft or something like that?

Here we go again!

Nobody has claimed that it will be operated as a civilian-registered aircraft under the auspices of the CAA, but as a contracted MoD aircraft with a military serial, just as HHA’s Hunters, for example, do at the moment.

There is no way it could be operated privatly over here anyway, the CAA have no love for afterburners!

Somehow appropriate that the ‘new owner’ appears to be a ghostly figure!

Do you think they may operate from a base that has lots of red a/c???

I`m still waiting to see the British and Russian heavies fly.

I’ve heard a rumor that this Phantom (38+48) will fly to the UK sometime in September.. I’ve had friends take a look at her over in Jever and it’s apparently on but as for the potential operator… No one seems to know??

Dave – if it were BAES that had the requirement I’d agree, but they’d probably need ex-RSAF machines (as I’m guessing the F4 is being referenced due to the AI radar) as the RAF’s fleet has pretty much been RTP’d. TBH, F16s would make more sense….
