Dutch Aviation Museums

Help needed please. I am planning a trip to visit a few museums in northern Holland and Germany. Soesterberg is on my list but appears to be closed whilst its contents are transfered to a new Defense Museum. http://www.nmm.nl/pers/ Not being a dutch speaker, can anyone confirm that there will be no access to the aircraft collection in June 2014.

A few years ago there were financial issues with the Aviodrome at Lelystad. Is it fully open to visitors now?

many thanks

Tim

Other suggestions for your trip:

– Liberty Park, Overloon

I remember Overloon from about 45yrs ago, when I was staying at Bruggen as an ATC cadet.
By abiding memory is looking at a Sherman tank which had been hit by an 88mm shell.
It looked as though someone had neatly drilled a hole in the side of the tank.
I only have a vague recollection of what aircraft were there, and don’t have any photos.

Hi Tim.

Don’t know how far your intrest reaches. There are 2 foundations that researches WWII crashes in the Schiphol / Amsterdam area.
This one is near the airport and is open every saterday from 11:00 to 16:00 http://www.crash40-45.nl/index_uk.html
The other one is a bit further (Heemskerk) and is open every sundan from 11:00 to 17:00. http://www.arg1940-1945.nl/engels/indexgb.htm

Both have lots of artifacts and focus on the personal stories behind the crashes.

Enjoy your stay

You can find all museums with ww2 artefacts on this website: http://en.tracesofwar.com . Choose your country and filter on museum.

The new military aviation museum will open in october. The old museum will remain open till june 30th. The old museum will of course have a limited collection only as part of the collection has already been moved.

I this the one in Delft ?

The old military museum in Delft (‘Guns and uniforms’) is being combined with the old military aviation museum from Kamp Zeist on their new location at the former airbase of Soesterberg, under the name Nationaal Militair Museum. It will have less aircraft on display, but in new-built premises and with lots better storage facilities. It will open in October 2014, so no access in June I’m afraid.

Other suggestions for your trip:
– The base museum at Deelen AFB
– Glider Collection Wolfheze
– Wings of Liberation Museum, Best
– Liberty Park, Overloon
– Early Birds Foundation collection, Lelystad and the Pionier Hangar nearby

Hi Tim

The new defense museum is planning to open in 2014 but that is not yet confirmed. And most of the aircraft will be suspended from the ceiling.

with regards

Henk

Thanks for the update Henk.

I’m not a fan of airframes being crucified, and least they are kept indoors and on display.
