Seeing the progress on the Dornier the other day does any one know of any plans for further recoveries in Europe or elsewhere ?

Hi All,
The Canadian Bomber Command are still on the go for their Halifax retrieval from off the coast of Ireland just getting the funding is the main problem, having said that they are well on track here is a link:- http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/main_projects.html

At one time the Halifax was thought extinct, now we have 3 gracing museums. Is there any news from the chap collecting parts to build another one?

Re the twin engine Luftwaffe type – Norwegian Lake ( not Swedish)

Dave (Classic Wings)

Thanks, Dave. I keep walking past that issue on the table but get distracted by one of the short people in the house.

Stirling Wreck

There must be a Stirling out there somewhere. Even the wreck of one?

I would love a Short Stirling to be recovered somewhere sometime. I do believe it is a crying shame that there is not one left, especially when it was heavily used by the RAF pre Lancaster days. Then used as glider tugs etc

It was a great aircraft and very manouverable and liked by its crews, it could take some punishment! Yes every plane has its draw backs but it was the first 4 engined Bomber and I am gutted it is not more noticably recognised.

My grandfather flew in 1941 and did 13 operational sorties with 7 Squadron as a WOP/AG. He always said to my dad when he was shot down on the 7th September 1941 on the way back from Berlin the stirling was riddled after night fighter attacks and flak, but gamely carried on flying on two engines.

Sadly the starboard outer started to crumble and the Pilot Yardley gave the order to bail out. Then the crew including my grandfather became POWs for the rest of the war…..

What a Bomber and well done for the Stirling Project on re-building the front fusealage section, a massive task but one of which brings a smile to my face that one day one will turn up or that section will be displayed someday.

I thought the FW189 was on top of a frozen lake? Either way, where is it?

The FW189 wasn’t underwater -there are two well known Beaufighters in Greek and Norwegian waters.

Was there not an Fw58 in a French Lake (I think)? IIRC it had human remains on board.

Water as in lakes? Still looking for German, lend lease and Soviet types in the Arctic Circle lakes. This is ongoing every year but with thousands of lakes it will take a while.
Former East German lakes – evidence of Fw190A, Fw190D, Bf110’s, Bu131 and even a MiG 15/17 (I’ve seen in video) in the German lakes. All lost April/May 1945 except the MiG!. Still there. All belong to the German State with no negotiation. Hence no-one has gone looking. Even the 1990 recovery of a Fw190D from Schwerin Lake was slated as one ID within a small search area and found to be another! Norway/Finland and Northern Russia will continue for a few years yet.
regards

Der,
Given the battering the weather has given some areas over the past few weeks I wonder if anything interesting might have been washed up somewhere along the coast?

like this?

I always wondered if official ‘Ditching’ trials and research left a number of airframes on the bottom around Rhu in Scotland?

Bearing in mind it’s current use, I suspect anything will have been cleared some time ago. Although I do wonder if the MAEE Ar196 is still there somewhere. My sister lives there, must ask her what the local gossip is!

IIRC, the He115 recovery in Norway (?) has been delayed till summer of this year. The same report – Classic Wings or AM, I think – also mentioned something about a “possible German twin” recently sighted in a Norwegian lake (for some reason I’m now thinking Sweden … was only skimming while flipping steaks on the BBQ!).

The recovery of the Northrop Nomad, in Lake Muskoka, Canada, is supposed to happen this year as the remains of the crew have been removed by the RCN’s divers. Again, the story of the recovery was in the latest Classic Wings.
