Just a footnote about Paul Raymond’s auction purchase of Rudel’s medal. He paid £20,000 for it outbidding among others Rudel’s widow who dropped out at £13,000. She had claimed that the medal was stolen and tried to get its sale blocked. The story was that it had been confiscated by a British military policeman. The vendor was anonymous. Her attempt was unsuccessful. Raymond put it on exhibition in his ill fated Whitehall Theatre of War. He subsequently returned it to the Rudel family.

Was the Stuka which landed Rudels?

Where is it now? I vaguely remember it came up for auction and was bought by Paul Raymond (he of the Soho Revue Bar) of all people who outbid Rudel’s widow. I can’t put a date on it, may be 1980’s, but there was a photo accompanying the report in The Times showing the said parties holding the golden Ritterkreuz and the Scroll no doubt signed by the Fuhrer which was presented at the same time. I believe Paul Raymond wanted it as an exhibit for his War Theatre museum project in London which eventually folded. He died in 2008. Someone here may be able to throw light on what became of the Medal.
Which set though……it’s said that Rudel was in possession of two sets, a second set being presented to him by Goering at a later date, to the original set presented to him by Hilter on 1st Jan ’45?

Rudel’s unique golden version.

Historic bit of film, especially being in colour.
Fasinating to see Galland’s Diamonds KC/OL/S glinting away in colour film, and Rudel’s unique golden version too.
Being a bit of a uniform details anorak, that was a nice ‘Crusher’ being worn by the USAAF guy frisking the Stuka crewman early in the film.
