Only one FW190 shot down over England ?

Hi apparently there was only one FW190 shot down over England,can anyone clarify this if so would you have the werk number and date this aircraft.

That was, in fact, the Fw190 downed by ground fire at Eastbourne on 26 August 1942. 10./JG26, Ofw Werner Kassa killed. W.Nr 2080.

Going back a few posts, like Ian_ I’d seriously doubt the ‘provenance’ of the control column described. However, it would be very interesting to see an image – particularly of the label – or a link to where it might be viewed?

I’m afraid a good few urban myths have surfaced in this thread!

For those who want an accurate account of the Fw 190 losses against Britain during the Tip-and-Run period then look no further than my colleague Chris Goss’s book. Time for a late Christmas present, maybe?

There was an FW190 Shot down and finished up on Torquay sea front beach. Bofor’s crews were ordered not to fire at them as they came in at almost street level, the guns would do more damage than the aircraft would. Causing serious damage almost demolishing whole rows of houses. The Bofor’s crew cook saw the aircraft and noticed no one manning the gun. Not knowing why the crew weren’t there he fired and shot the aircraft down. Only to be disciplined for his effort. Amazing story.

  • Ground fire: 3 Fw190 losses
  • Anti aircraft fire: 9 Fw190 losses
  • Fighter action: 7 Fw190 losses

The boffins at Franborough carried out a full metalurgical examination on the wreckage of a FW190 A2 that crashed on 26 August 42. Unfortunately the report dosen’t give the Werke number or the squadron codes or the crash location.

Just a thought, but I’d be interested to hear about Fw190 combat over the UK as my wife’s late grandfather was a 190 pilot.

For WNr.5331 we have:

  • Fw190A-3 – WNr.0135331 – TP+ME – coded 3+ (white 3) of 4./JG2 – 100% loss, Bindon Hill, Lulworth Cove, Dorset (near Portland), England on 21-Oct-42. Flew into hillside in bad visibility. Loss report lists enemy AA-fire. Blitz lists WNr.533. Fw.Werner Brychy Killed. [sources: Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #7)-Vol.11; Ring, JG2 loss list, p.9; Blitz, Then & Now, p.181 txt]

I have 33 Fw190s as having landed or crashed on British soil during WW2. I have the following recorded as landing in error:

23 June 1942 – Fw190A-3 – Stab III./JG2 – WNr.5313 – Oberlt. Armin Faber – RAF Pembrey
16 April 1943 – Fw190A-4 – 7./SKG10 – WNr.47155 – Fw. Otto Bechtold (Bechtolder?) – RAF West Malling
17 April 1943 – Fw190A-5 – 5./SKG10 – WNr.2719 – Lt. Fritz Setzer – RAF West Malling
17 April 1943 – Fw190A-4 – 7./SKG10 – WNr.47152 – Oberfw. Otto Schulz – Undershot the runway at RAF West Malling ended up crashing at Springetts Hill Farm, East Malling.
20 May 1943 – Fw190A-4/U-8 – 2./SKG10 – WNr.45843 – Uffz. Heinz Ehrhardt – RAF Manston
20 June 1943 – Fw190A-5/U-8 – 1./SKG10 – WNr.52596 – Uffz. Werner Oehme – RAF Manston

Oblt. Arnim Faber’s Fw190A-3 was indeed the first intact Fw190 to fall into British hands at RAF Penbury on 23rd June 1942. This example later became MP499. The West Malling Fw190 landed in error on 17th April 1943 and belonged to Feldwebel.Otto Bechtold of II./SKG10. This example received the RAF serial PE822…

There seems to be more than one FW190 that landed in the UK by mistake, there is the fabled one that was landed by Arnim Faber at Pembury South Wales and this other one at West Malling? I thought the South wales one was first.

Can I offer something that I have said repeatedly in my former professional life?- Everything on the Interweb is subject to a question. Where is the profit? A serious website covering anything costs- money or time, which in the real world are interchangeable. When I did such things, my last major update took 300 hours of my time. The next question is what makes it worth someones time converting their research into a web presence? This is a difficult question. Do you do research and tell your colleagues, or publish in a learned journal, or put it out on the Interweb?

I can’t find it on a Google search! There may be a reason.

The Bindon Hill 190 is on the army range and thus out of bounds for detecting. Very unlikely to have come from there. The same vendor was also selling parts of a 190 recovered in France in the eighties. I’m very doubtful they the parts were as described, the whole aircraft having been cremated so comprehensively the armoured windscreen had melted.

3+-, upper surface of wing marked T+PF, disintegrated, wreckage over a large area, engine carried on for at least half a mile from main wreckage.

Hi Pete the reason for my asking the question is as a previous thread i had entered,is that i have come across a relic FW190 Grip,that when purchased it had a label on it that read.

On 21/10/1942 I have Werk Nr. 5331 down at East Lulworth.
