WW2 gauges in degrees celcius

G’day
I was recently looking at some photos of a Lancaster engineers panel and noticed some of the gauges are in celcius. I was curious to know why this was so and why they weren’t in fahrenheit as I assumed this was the standard measurement for this period.

Are you sure it was ‘Celsius’ and not ‘Centigrade’?

I suppose the Celsius / Centigrade scale is more useful as it is directly linked to the properties of water (or water antifreeze mix) used in the engines?
