Lufthansa Starliner Restoration Update Oct 2013

This link is to an update on the rebuild progress, with a prediction that the aircraft will be fully re-assembled during 2014.

Is this the most expensive aircraft restoration ever?

Money spent is of no consequence – the bottom line is how much more will it cost to operate? same with Governments, who have a habit of cancelling things after spending huge sums. The money already spent has no effect on future balance sheets

Shock news – project cancellation?

http://www.conniesurvivors.com/1-connie_news.htm

Seems a rather hasty decision after all this money has been spent, can this be true?

Further report and good photos of the foam discharge. Hope it is not too corrosive for the plane!

That is a true shame as most of the foam used for hangars is highly corrosive.

May be so, I was just outlining the technical problems that had to be overcome with this huge restoration.

That report is a year out of date: I think the aircraft is back on its gear now.

An interesting technical update on the restoration progress and highlighting some of the problems which initially seemed to be insurmountable.

Lufthansa have reduced the work force on the restoration, hope this is a positive sign as completion is nearing the first flight!

And if you are not able to read the Propliner report, the Hamilton Standard propellers are being overhauled in Canada by Chet Heth who is 96 years young!

Three page report with many colour photos of the progress on the Starliner in the current issue of Propliner. The end of 2014 is still the hoped for first flight.

Wow, the amount of effort and money going into this project is mind-boggling. Serious kudos to Lufthansa!
I can’t help thinking about the contrast with BA and the debacle of the Cosford airliner collection…

I appreciate the effort of Lufthansa as well, hoping to fly in this Connie (or Super Connie, as they were called in Germany) in a few years (maybe 2015?). I read, Anderson Airmotive is restoring 6 engines. Seems fitting, as the Connie was known to be the best three-engined airplane ever built, lol (due to the notorious unreliability of the turbo-compound engines, more than only few planes were landing with only 3 of their 4 engines running….) But the sound of them…. Wow!

Worth every penny IMHO. Hopefully Lufthansa will be busy running pleasure flights in a few years, shall I start queuing now! Its a shame more of the ‘legacy’ airlines don’t take their heritage more seriously.

Totally agree with everything you’ve said there! Would love a flight in one of these classics – especially after watching the trailer for the Breitling Super Connie.

Aye, much kudos to Lufthansa for this project, I look forward it seeing it at an airshow in the future.
