Morning all! Just wondering if anyone here has any memories of the Vulcan cockpit section that used to be housed in the Market Rasen ATC unit back in the 80’s? I used to go along and help out there when stationed at Binbrook and have a few small items from it, but just never been able to find out it’s serial number or find any other information about it!! Goggling only seems to come up with a mention of someone ‘seeing it from a train line . . ‘ 🙂 I know it was scrapped sometime around the the late 80’s
Cheers all

I have a windscreen that I rescued from a scrap yard near Benson Oxon. Whilst unlikley to be from this aircraft, the cockpit had originally gone to MB at Chalgrove to help with rear crew ejection seat designs (before that idea was shelved). I have always wondered what aircraft that came from
Hi Tony. Would you be interested in selling the windscreen ?

No problem – I forgot to mention, in edition 13 there was no mention of Market Rasen!
It might be worthwhile asking the question on the contact board of this site http://www.vforcereunion.co.uk/ – features all trades so someone might have been involved in moving it to the ATC Squadron!

Sorry for the delayed feedback today (busy preparing a World War I Notts Aviation Powerpoint presentation for next Saturday)!
Under the Market Rasen location:
Wrecks & Relics 11 lists it as follows – “By 10/86 an ATC unit here was noted to have the cockpit section of a Vulcan. More details appreciated.”
Wrecks & Relics 12 lists it as follows – “Circa 1988 the anonymous Vulcan nose held with an ATC unit here was scrapped due to its poor condition. What chance now of finding out which one it was?”
Back to the Powerpoint!! 🙂

Thanks chaps . . as with all these things at the time, never thought to take photos or any other details. Dam fine idea with the ‘Wrecks and Relics’!! I think NAM may have copy or email for Ken . . I shall let you know if/when I find out

Ken Ellis’s ‘Wrecks & Relics’ editions 6 through to 10, covering the late 70s to mid 80s don’t feature Market Rasen as a place name in the index. A look through all the entries in each edition for Lincolnshire county comes up with no candidates, apart from those on airfield at Scampton and Waddington and a nose briefly at Tattershall Thorpe 84-85. If anyone has a ‘W&R’ Ed.11 or 12 sitting on their bookshelves it might be worth a scan through the entries. So surprisingly, I therefore don’t come up with an answer. Sorry for the negative reply, but might stop others being frustrated looking up the same source!
