Hello,
I’m an archaeologist currently working on a collection of aircraft parts discarded in Darwin Harbour at the end of WWII. The majority are Consolidated PBY Catalina parts, but we’ve also found a small collection of Spitfire components, including landing struts, a wingtip, aileron control levers and a few ribs and frames. There are a couple that I am still puzzling over and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, advice or suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂
This part is a stainless steel tapered frame assembly with a line of brackets / stiffeners [?] attached, measuring approx 1 metre / 39.5″ long x 14.2 cm / 5.5″ wide in maximum size. It was found with some clearly identifiable Spitfire parts and has that Spitfire look, but I’m not 100% certain it actually is Spitfire.
It has a bunch of part numbers & inspection stamps on it. The main frame has part # 3 3038 287 179, and each of the brackets have #s, including 38 391 64 SS, 38 389 60 SS, 38 387 55 SS, 38 335 51 SS and 38 303 64 SS.
I’m not sure if the “38” on the brackets signifies that it is a engine cowling part – and I can’t figure out the number on the main frame as I can’t find any references to 330 being a Mk #….
I’ve attached a few photos and would be very grateful for any help.
Thank you,
Caroline.

Thank you so much Ian, you’re a star!
Stainless is amazing – these pieces are coming out of the water completely encrusted and after a bit of cleaning look as good as new!
Thanks again 🙂

It’s the support from around the exhaust stubs on one side of the engine, so you were right with the cowling number. Stainless is amazing stuff!
