Watching Bargain Hunt today whilst having lunch and one of the items purchased was a plaster ashtray with the heads and shoulders of two 1920’s style aviators. The bowl of the ashtray was in the form of a large question mark. It was passed off without any reference to it’s potential origin.
I wondered if this was a French souvenir – either of the Breguet 19 Super Bidon “Point d’Interrogation” or even of Nungesser and Coli in “L’Oiseau Blanc” with the question mark relating to the mystery of what happened to them.
Has anybody seen one of these ashtrays and know it’s background?
Thanks

I haven’t seen that episode, but it’s almost certainly a “Point d’Interrogation” souvenir. The curved question mark symbol was used in virtually every reference to the flight.
Did you get the chance to look closely at the aviators’ images? Francois Coli wore a distinctive patch over his right eye, so it would be pretty easy to tell if it was the crew of “L’Oiseau Blanc”.
