I have always thought that this museum is one of the worlds best and most understated. Even the building its self is amazing and it is a must to do when in Brussels.

Avion ancien’s post 19, above, prompted me to check my log of a visit in June 1996: I scored 90 entries that day. I agree it is one of the world’s great collections.

Yes, I agree.
Also regarding the cost of renovation of the building. So much money is wasted by our governments on needless projects.

Their WW1 collection is amazing (as is the rest).
Thankfully the WW1 aircraft are now easier to examine and admire than during the beginnings of the Museum as my attached photo shows.

I agree with what several others have said, it is a wonderful museum with a very diverse collection. It probably has the best collection in the world of authentic WW1 aircraft.

You would think that as the Museum is located in the capital of the EU, some funds could be made available to fully restore the building which is itself a masterpiece.

B-17

last time I checked, we still had it. At the back of the hall, next to the C-119.

If ever you feel you want to dispose of this to help with some needed building maintenance funding please PM me,

Regards

I last went there in, I think, the late 1970s. I’ve tried to find any photographs or notes dating from then, but largely without success. All I’ve found, at the back of an old note book, is the following:

‘Aircraft unidentified at the Musée de l’Armée, Bruxelles, on 30 August

2 x Dagling type primary gliders
2 x modern type gliders (probably Grunau Baby)
1 x modern sailplane
1 x fuselage of Voisin type biplane
2 x monoplane fuselages
2 x Auster fuselages
1 x part stripped Auster fuselage
5 x Stampe SV-4 fuselages
1 x airship gondola
1 x rigid hang glider’

Can anyone now identify that which I failed to identify thirty plus years ago?

a last publicity…

(from wikipedia ) :

Aviation hall

The north wing, built by Gideon Bordiau, has been occupied by the aviation hall since 1972 when the Air and Space gallery was inaugurated.

The collection includes various types of aircraft, both military and civilian, some dating back to the early twentieth century, while the most recent additions include a F-16 Fighting Falcon and Westland Sea King.
The collection is one of the largest in the world.

I went in 1982 and again last year. No problems with taking photos on either occasion. A great place to visit and I would recommend it to anybody.

A truly great museum, I have visited twice in recent years and look forward to my next visit. A very wide range of military and civilian aircraft. The adjoining Military museum is also very interesting. I have an interest in WW1, having a father that served at the Somme and Ypres, so it is good to be able to visit “next door” as well. I hope the repairs progress well.

Have you still got the B-17 cockpit roof section?, I saw this on a photograph under another aircraft a while back

Ah yes…Friesland. All along the northern coast of NL & D. West Friesland, Ost Friesland, Friesland & Nord Friesland. In WW1 Navy history check out the SMS Ostfriesland.
Here in the North we have many jokes about the “Ost Friesen” but I won’t tell any here. Just like the Blond Jokes, etc.

Attached is another photo from the Museum.
The old one of the Spitfire MkXIVE SG55 is from July 1970, as is the one attached of the FBA Type H & followers in trail formation.

Impressive, yes, but we really need to get more money for the renovations. The roof is full of leaks and the two elevated side galleries are in very bad condition. One was even closed because it was deemed unsafe. We have an amazing collection, but urgently need more funding for building maintenance.

Seems like they have now changed their policy.

“Photos may be taken solely for private use – if taken for professional use a specific permission must be obtained”

When I visited in 1994 I was required to leave my camera at reception.

Hello, Good Vibs..

I ‘ve checked, &… indeed,…….. I didn’ t know there is -also- a Friesland in Germany !

…………………

Dutch: Friesland [ˈfris.lɑnt] ) is a province in the north of the Netherlands and part of the ancient, larger region of Frisia.

…..

The renovation of the hall is ongoing, but due to lack of funds it is going VERY slowly. The front façade has been restored but much work left to do!

………………………………..that’s right !! 😡

Nope, it was painted like that when it was an exhibition aircraft. It’s now restored in authentic colours 😉
