Hi,
I’m looking for some details on a Chipmunk from 1 FTS which crashed near Malton, Yorks in April 1963. Looking for crew name/s and serial number.
Thanks.
Regards,
Alex

I suppose there is no listing for damage rather than write offs?
Only if you spend the time at the RAF Museum going through the individual record cards.

Hi,
Thanks for all your replies. As far as I know the Chipmunk was recovered by a Belvedere so it may have been repaired and put back into service.

That would mean it was (mainly) one lump without bits hanging off; probably ripe for a rebuild rather than scrap.

WP862 was written off but her cockpit survived as a PAX trainer, so the fuselage at least probably wasn’t to badly damaged.

Is there a possibility that the Chipmunk was not written off, maybe just damaged, repaired and returned to service?

I would suggest WP862 which crashed on 19/04/63, although she was surving with Leeds UAS at the time rather than 1 FTS.

The only Chipmunks I can find in my notes with 1FTS that were written off are –
WP854 5 Feb 1962 at Rufforth
WZ869 20 May 1968 at Linton-on-Ouse

Nothing jumping out in Air Britain’s Broken wings or the W series for Chipmunks serials for that approximate date and/or location.
