Plans are being proposed to develop parts of the airfield at Old Sarum by building residential and commercial properties. If this were to go ahead the money raised would go towards the repair of the WW1 hangars and build a better control tower and cafe. The document says they hope to encourage more historic aircraft to be based there and use Goodwood(with 3 runways) and Duxford(hard and grass runway) as examples of how they would like it to be in the future.

As I see it the residential building that has already taken place, within the circuit, has already harmed the use of the airfield for display flying and any further building will stop it completely. The single runway is also a handicap especially being that it is often effected by being in the lee of the hangars/buildings when the wind is northerly.
I do support the restoration of the remaining WW1 buildings but could the money not come from the Lottery Heritage fund instead and leave the airfield intact or possibly even add a second runway.

Some of the airfield residents are pretty pessimistic. Look on the bright side, we do have another role as a fuel depot when things get a bit tight for the locals.

The new dwellers will obviously kick up a stink about aircraft noise even though they would know it was there before they moved in.

Looking at the site on Google Maps it doesn’t seem likely that a usable strip on any other alignment is an easy option.
(Nice to see the aircraft caught on late final by the Google pic)

‘The residential dwellings will be of low density and of high quality’ -in other words expensive!
