Chipmunk WP929 in silver – any pictures out there?

Well known Duxford based Chipmunk WP929/G-BXCV is shortly to undergo some refurbishment work. Having worn the same paint since 1993, the owner has decided it is time for a change from the late scheme she currently wears and has decided upon the earlier silver scheme. We have a b/w photo of it with 8 AEF at Shawbury in 1969, complete with a letter describing the details of the markings, but this is the dayglo scheme with some rather extravegant fuselage markings and the 8 AEF emblem. As the photo is in b/w it isn’t clear if this is the later light aircraft grey scheme or silver as both seemed to be around still at that time. Either way it is not what the owner wants and dayglo is out. A generic scheme is easy as we have the drawings for it, but it would be nice to work to greater accuracy with a record photograph of the actual aircraft. So do any forumites have a photo of WP929 in service wearing the silver scheme with yellow trainer bands and code letter? Incidently, apparently WP929 served on 8 AEF longer than any other Chipmunk.

I have a couple of 35mm slides of WP929 at Shawbury taken around March – April 1972. She was coded Y on the fin and was in a similar scheme to the photo of WG417 earlier in the thread; Dayglo panels and a white canopy surround, but I think that the base colour looks more silver than grey. If anyone can give me advice on how to transfer a 35mm colour slide image onto something that I can attach to a post I will do so.

Rod
I would surmise that the slow take up might be because the a/c would only be repainted whenever required on calender servicing (paint) or perhaps during a Major Service !
Where I work almost all our Hawks are Black except for one a/c which is still in the old and much loved ‘Ripple’ colours purely because the a/c had a major service just before the decision to go black was finalised !

TonyT:

Looks the same scheme bar the 8 AEF badge

Not quite – WD353 is in a short-lived Birmingham UAS scheme (of identical vintage to 8 AEF’s scheme).

What I’ve never noticed before is that while both WD353 and WG417 are in the overall Light Aircraft Grey scheme, both have white canopy frames!

I’m intrigued by the timing of the LAG scheme. Polyurethane LAG paint effectively replaced the cellulose High Speed Silver paint in 1966, yet the “take up” rate on the Chipmunk was very slow, with only a handful appearing in this scheme around 1969. The first documentation I’ve located thus far regarding this scheme is DH’s Mod H.293 dated June 1970, yet by then the first variant of the Red/White/LAG was already appearing at 2 FTS, Church Fenton!

Thoughts anyone please?

Cheers,

Rod.

Yes that’s very similar to the b/w picture that we have. However, Dayglo is off the menu…

Looking at that scheme in the black and white I posted, a contemporary to it was this

Looks the same scheme bar the 8 AEF badge

Can’t help, but it was the first aircraft I flew in – 1970 at Shawbury!

She was then grey and dayglo, of course.

Would love to see the 1969 photo.
