Sad news W.O. Jack Hodges passes away

Hi Trumper, Yes no problem, my pleasure, he wasn’t one to brag or tell stories, he really didn’t feel he had done anything special. But one day when he was at the museum he told me how an American unit had called him to knock out a Tiger Tank in the Normandy area, the Tiger had already knocked out several Shermans. He said he came in low over the American’s and sighted the Tiger on top of a hill, he said he let it have his full salvo of rockets and as he climbed and banked round he saw the gun turret flying through the air! he flew back over the GI’s who were cheering his victory. Another story he told me was the time he was testing some new radios when a well spoken English acsent came over the intercom and requested them to return to base, Jack knew it was a German intercepting the signals and replied “not until you have had this lot” he and his wing man then proceeded to attack the nearerst ground target which was a railway siding. The last story that stuck in my mind was him telling me how while at high alitude he could hear a kind of buzzing sound on the intercom, this was the 88 flak guns plotting them, having heard this sound he threw his aircraft to one side to get out of the area when seconds later several flack bursts exploded close to his original position. I really wish I had recorded his stories but I know if I had produced a digital recorder he would have changed the subject!
