Before the Mod’s pull this – I was going to put it in the modelling section but I’m not sure its as well followed as Historic….
Some of you may have grabbed some super deals in Home Bargains recently – ex Modelzone stock I think:
1/72 RAF/Quatar C-17 for £7.99
1/32 LST Glider £3.99
1/144 A320 £3.99
1/144 F-15 for £1.99….
1.72 Canberra PR.9 for £3.99
But I popped in to my local Wilko’s today and they are selling the new tool Airfix P-40C and P-51D for 4 quid each…as starter sets!
So what for 2014….
Smart money says 1/72 Vickers VC-10, 1/72 Avro Lincoln is rumoured together with 1/72 Defiant and possibly a Meteor or Hunter…. more obscure are suggestions of an Attacker or Scimitar….
I think they could bring a few classics easily up to date at minimal cost….ie the Islander into a Defender with a new engine sprue….
Anyway, just thought that lots of us in historic are all modelmakers and that you might like to know about the bargains and maybe discuss what you’d like to see Airfix do next year!

Wingnut the NZ company owned by Peter Jackson from Lord of the Rings fame do WW1 1/32 scale and highly accurate, indeed they use the same drawings and computer measured data they use on their full scale fliers..

They truly are magnificent kits but beyond my price and skill range!
The D-Day Anniversary I hadn’t thought of before – the 1/24th Typhoon is a very clever idea though I suspect the rumour mill may have detected Airfix wallahs clambering all over the Hendon example.
Equally, the concept of a 1/24th bipe (Camel – surely?) is a cunning one!
I can’t wait until WW release a 1/32 Avro 504….I would save up for that…can’t do anything about the lack of skill though!

Really interesting Jerry! I can’t help thinking they – whoever they are – should have talked to us first. Unless they have the missing Westland drawings, they would benefit from the work we have done. What is the source of the rumour? Stu, are you able to come in for comment here?

I think the WW1 kit releases could do with a re-think. Almost every type has been done by lots of different manufacturers but in the most-common 1/72 scale they are small, difficult to make models.
A nice range of really well produced WW1 types in 1/32 (or even 1/24?) scale would be great. OK, the usual stuff like Fokker D-VII, Sopwith Camel, Brisfit, Albatros, etc, etc. but how about BE2 or Martinsyde Elephant or Halberstadt? Even a couple of twins like the HP 0-400 or a Gotha would be superb.
With a goodly amount of well-produced resin parts like guns, engines and crew figures and properly planned nichrome rigging wires they could be really nice models and a real hit.
It’s 100 years next year from the beginning of WW1, perhaps that will encourage something from the manufacturers:cool:

Hi
well they have already done all the research etc for the 1:72nd series and there is apparently a ‘major’ manufacturer doing a 1:32 whirlwind, I doubt the big boys would do one, no profit, and there is a rumour circulating that special hobby is.

Why do you reckon that, Jerry?
By: brewerjerry - 21st August 2013 at 16:57
Hi
I personally think the only realistic option for a large scale whirlwind kit is
a 1:32 special hobby issue

Can’t you buy your stock from them instead of the wholesellers?
If only it were that simple, whilst not presuming to answer on behalf of Mr Merry, from my own experience I would respond as follows.
Manufacturers / suppliers encourage you to pre-order all of the new kits well in advance of their release date – often months before.
Release dates approach; you only receive partial supplies or none at all, with production & shipping issues being cited as the reason for this delay.
Bigger outlets receive larger quantities (bulk purchasing can be a good lever), but then they cease trading – and then surprise, surprise, your stock starts to comes through!
The real kick in the teeth comes when the other stock then comes starts to come onto the market at rock bottom prices – great for the modellers, but not great for the smaller independent retailers.
I believe that such a scenario is partially alluded to in here!
Sadly it’s not easy to maintain good customer relations and an established clientele on the basis that you might occasionally pick-up some cheap stock!

A 1/48 Blenheim (I’m sure there isn’t a 1/48 one out?) to go next to my Beaufighter & Mossie would be great too 😀
Classic Airframes do / did a Blenheim I and IV in 1/48 but it’s not one of their best products. I think it was improved in a later release but the resin fit is difficult, the surface detail is fairly minimal and the transparency fit is poor. I’ve been struggling with an early version of the Mk I kit for a while.

Love your Lanc, Hampden98! I got the Revell version for Christmas last year – interesting choice, I’ve not built a kit for nearly twenty years, and I’ve not actually got any parts together yet (lots of painting – and mixing paints too, quite a complex kit!)… but the box has now been signed by Les Munro, George Johnson, Maureen Stephens and (Christian name escapes me) Stopes-Wallis… so I really ought to get it finished this winter!
There were some lovely WW1 aircraft in the old Airfix range – I remember a Roland and a Halberstadt that I built, would be great to see modern versions.

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Great War pretty sure there will be a big emphasis on re-tooled or new release World War One aircraft . Would like to see a 1/72nd Avro Lincoln plus a Vickers Viking/Valetta or Varsity in 1/72 scale. As per the style of this years RAF Bomber re-supply set how about a USAAF and Luftwaffe set also.

Hello
In 1/24, I would think a Hawker Typhoon would be good, ( 70th anniversary of D Day ) but what i really hope they do is a range of WW 1 kits in 1/24, starting with a Camel or SE5a

I’m a retailer, please don’t get me on about the idiots that sell under wholesale price!!

That was me who said that. On the Armed forces day Mike E at Nostel did a good trade. Yes ‘bargains’ are out there but most of the time it’s an impulse buy.
I’m a retailer, please don’t get me on about the idiots that sell under wholesale price!!
I didn’t realise that Nostell was still active on the aviation side – 33 years ago I purchased and collected a Skeeter helicopter from there!
Like you don’t get me started on pricing!!

Airfix are also promising something new in 1/24th…..any ideas?
Probably a bomber / PR version of their excellent Mosquito.
I’d love a 1/24 Wellington with exposed Geodetic parts, that would make a spectacular model 😎
