The first thing I thought of when this project was announced was how many people would fall into this hole of being born elsewhere but having most of their life associated with a town which is then told no.

Looking at the local VCs to here there are two that I can find associated with Stockport though only 1 looks like he was actually born in the town. It gets even worse if you look at Tameside, there five WW1 VCs but only 1 was born in the area, none were overseas but they were all from other areas. Ironically one of them was from Cheadle Hulme in Stockport but moved to Droylsden with his family. So where should they be commemorated?

Was this not highly predictable?

The VC Trust have confirmed place of birth to be the criteria.

So that might cause a problem with Major Mannock, then!

The case of Major ‘Mick’ Mannock VC, DSO, MC might yet be tricky with several towns cited as his birthplace; Brighton, Aldershot and Canterbury being variously given. In addition, Cork and somewhere in India are also suggested. As to town of residence, we have Canterbury and Wellingborough both competing.

Question; what is the qualification for ‘home town’? Place of birth? Main town of residence during their lifetime? Place of residence at time of award?

Three months flying training then on to the frontline. No wonder so many died.

While we froth and rant some further reading on what was an incredible feat in many different ways. This includes a transcript of Flight Sub Lt Warneford’s report.

Er and how the New York Times reported it!

Stuff all this bloody nonsense! How much does it cost to buy a suitable slab( or scrounge one) and have it inscribed. A quick whip round and a friendly chat with a local monumental mason who would like his pic in the local paper with the Mayor and its done and dusted.

Cue much frothing at the mouth and semi-coherent political ranting.

Poor show, it seems that Exmouth would be more than happy to honour him.
