Warbird Restoration – book or blog?

Hi all, I’m new to this forum but have a 40 year+ interest in current and historic aviation, hoping to learn some new things from people here.

I’m fascinated by the lengthy process of restoring a WW2 warbird such as a Hurricane or Spitfire, sometimes involving virtually the remanufacture of all parts. However apart from a few tantalising photos on websites such as for the Mosquito restoration recently in New Zealand, does anyone know of a detailed book on such a restoration? Or even better an online diary? I’ve seen a few but nothing as comprehensive as I’m looking for. I guess most restorers are too busy working on the project to document it fully but would be very interested to see it. Quite often when someone is building a homebuilt aircraft such as a Vans they do a detailed online day-by-day blog, this is the sort of thing I’m looking for.

Thanks for any pointers,

– Michael

Another link I’ve found helpful: Tim O’Connor’s scratchbuilt P-26 projects in the USA.

Thanks for the links, some good ones there. The Blackah Spitfire book sounds good as well.

There is also the book on the restoration of Brendan Deere’s Spitfire in New Zealand, I can also think of an American book about the restoration of a couple of P38 Lightnings. can’t remember the proper title though, sorry.

For a blog I can highly recommend this one about a Hurricane being restored in the USA by JNE Restorations.
http://www.jneaircraft.com/am274/
Plenty of photos and history…and you can chart its progress over the years.

The nice thing about blogs (as opposed to books) is they’re updated frequently and they’re free!

If you’re not familiar with the USA-based forum Warbird Information Exchange, I can also recommend it.
There are frequent posts on ongoing restorations and recoveries.
And it’s not limited to USA projects or aircraft (this forum can occasionally seem UK-centric), there are many contributors from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

There is a book titled “Spitfires and polished metal”, don’t know if it is still available. It’s a photo book done by Airlife. Quite good.

Any update on the DH.9 Andy? For me, that holds far more interest than yet another new-build Spitfire (although I know I’ll be in the minority here with that view!) 🙂

I am involved with a documentary being made for Ch4 on another Mk I Spitfire restoration project through build to flight that will be broadcast after the first flight of the aircraft concerned. This may be of interest in due course, MichaelJP59.

Yes, but it is only updated sporadically (nearly a year since the last one) and doesn’t give much info other than short photo captions

And I also have a great one on the restoration of the Vacher Hurricane, the title and author of which escape me at this moment.

Author is Peter Vacher!

There is, of course, our very own Tangmere (Andy Saunders) excellent tome on Spitfire MK.I P9374

And I also have a great one on the restoration of the Vacher Hurricane, the title and author of which escape me at this moment.
