WWII ace’s crash site discovered in Germany after 69 years

This is the first in a three-part series on World War II ace pilot Grant Turley and the search for his crash site.

SALT LAKE CITY — My great-uncle Grant Turley was a fighter pilot during World War II. I’m named after him, and he has always been my hero. At the age of 21, Grant went on a 10-day tear over the skies of Europe and became Arizona’s first ace. Newspapers dubbed him the “Snowflake Storm,”

Sorry if this has been posted before but thought it an inspiring story. I couldn’t find it in a search of the site.

From the article

Grant took part in the first daylight raid on Berlin on March 6, 1944

Should of course read:

“Grant took part in the first Eighth Air Force daylight raid on Berlin on March 6, 1944″

By Jove Geoff, I do believe I’ve got it. “As the P-47 Thunderbolt worked up to operational status, it gained a nickname: the “Jug” (because its profile was similar to that of a common milk jug of the time) contrary to some who believe “Jug” was short for Juggernaut. However, I prefer the other nickname T-Bolt. Hope you enjoy part II.

Hi Belforte,
Read part2 very interesting story I think Werner Oeltjebruns is owed a great deal of gratitude for taking the time and trouble to locate these Aircraft,Pilots/Aircew and forward the news to the Family’s surviving members so they get as you Americans call it closure that they so desperately need.

Hi Belforte,
Well being a yank I won’t hold that against you :highly_amused::highly_amused: I think you Americans referred to them as the Flying Jug and correct me if I am wrong anybody but we shortened it to the jug :eagerness:
I’ll now read Pt2 many thanks again.

Interesting story, are the other parts on line yet? I hope he turned his guns off before firing that footage of the chute.
