dark light

Stephen Grey, Thank you for your years of pleasure you have given us al.

I see it posted that Stephen Grey will be performing his last public displays at Flying Legends 2013.
Thank you Sir for allowing us the privilege of seeing your collection of fantastic warbirds at first hand, on the ground and the air.
Happy flying.

IIRC he has Swiss nationality though.

I always thought he had a Scottish twang to his voice:confused: and just assumed he lived in Switzerland .

That would explain it. Or honours might have been offered and turned down. And people have to be proposed by individuals and/ or organisations for consideration. So here’s our opportunity!!

It’s a perfectly reasonable suggestion, look at some of the knighthoods freely handed out……….Alex Ferguson?
Maybe a knighthood is a bit ott, but certainly an MBE or an OBE would suffice.

IIRC he has Swiss nationality though.

Gents,
Please re-read the Fighter Collection news report. Mr Grey is retiring from public displays. If he were retiring from flying completely, I’d be concerned about the excellent guys who work on his collection of aeroplanes and it’d be sad to see such unique types dispersed.

Well, given I suspect he would freely admit he’s no spring chicken (I know people his age that struggle with driving a car still, let alone a high performance piston warbird) I suspect he’s probably going to have to call it time on flying – full stop, sooner or later.
I don’t neccessary see that means an end to TFC though.

A knighthood? Blimey what have you lot been drinking?

When I first read the thread I thought he’d past on, glad he hasn’t, enjoy your retirement.

As well as being quite useful at the controls of WWII aircraft, Mr Grey also writes highly enjoyable flying articles in the FL programme.
I’m hoping one day he will write a book:eagerness:

So maybe Mr Grey has defied the well-known adage and will indeed be an old, bold pilot.

Cheers,
Matt

I wouldn’t call Stephen Grey a bold pilot. I have never seen him fly in a way that was anything but safe, very polished, and highly professional.

Wider ramifications….

TFC is and always has been excellent place to visit and essential for anyone visiting Duxford. There is a few stories I could reel off from my experiences there, but I have shared my insight of TFC before and been told off for doing so, so I’ll keep schtum! I spent a happy 5 years volunteering there, just a day a week. It was great to work on 2 Thunderbolts, the Grumman Cats, Corsair etc and learn that a Mustang is MUCH more maintenance friendly than a Spitfire.
Stephen, thank you. When you strapped on the Bearcat, it knocked the decades away. I always looked forward to ‘The Joker’.

Cheers,
Kurt

I hate to say it, but it’s nice to read of one of the big names of historic flying being able to retire, rather than reading about another fatality.

So maybe Mr Grey has defied the well-known adage and will indeed be an old, bold pilot.

Cheers,
Matt

If you read this forum Stephen all I can say is, have a happy retirement Mr Grey and thanks for everything you have done over the years. You and the Fighter collection have brought us the most amazing sights and sounds for many, many years.
I have many fond memories of aircraft I never would of seen flying if not for Stephen’s efforts, so Mr Grey enjoy flying for pleasure and I look forward to seeing you display one last time next weekend.

I’m sorry, but shouldn’t these tributes come after legends 2013, rather than before? Seems a little premature to me. Its like saying goodbye to someone before they’ve even got their coat on!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Grey on the Monday after the May air show – what a fantastic guy! We’d been set up over the weekend with our PC in TFC’s hangar letting people try out their new flight simulator, DCS. My defining memory having Reno Air Racing Champion Steven Hinton try out the Mustang. He couldn’t get it started and then all we heard was Stephen say, in his usual tone; “Come on, boy. It’s a stock cockpit – You should know better than that!”. A great man and I’m glad I’ve had the chance to see him fly so much over the last few years.

Another Thank you from here,a world class performance and collection.

Yes, a big thank you, Mr. Grey, for all your time, effort and enthusiasm which has enabled us to enjoy a myriad of aircraft over the years.

Let’s not forget that Stephen Grey also did a number of filming projects – Piece of Cake and Memphis Belle to name a couple.

A superb character in every sense. I approached him, last year a couple of sundays before FL and asked him if it was he I was speaking to, after an outing in his Bearcat. His reply was that he was the very Stephen Grey and that I don’t let his mother know that I saw him in flight gear. He came across as a truly great man, but humble and approachable at the same time. I guess that’s why there’s always a great atmosphere at Duxford.
