The ex-Bomber Command base at Bourn near Cambridge operates at the moment as an airfield
There are plans to build over it; the sound of aero engines will be stilled for ever.
Please take a moment to sign the e-petition, whatever good it may do.

My father was based there with XV Squadron on Stirlings. I drove past the place a few months ago, so from my point of view it would be tragic as his final take off in 1943 took place before being shot down over Belgium and by some coincidence my son and I are going to Belgium tomorrow to visit his grave at Heverlee War Cemetry and also the crash site at Helchteren ( Limburg). Where exactly would all those people housed there work as from memory it is not that close to Cambridge?

Somewhat vague e-petition detail header, and no mention of Bourn airfield. No time to dig deeper so signed it anyway, but with that e-petition header don’t expect too many signatures.

I have signed, for what it’s worth. I used the old A45 thousands of times passing the Northern fringe of the airfield, when I lived in the area for many years and latterly saw the Cambourne development encroach from the West so I suspect the inevitable, but we can remain hopeful, at least!

Duly signed , but piddling in the wind as new housing will overcome nostalgia. Greed and profit has stepped in front of aviation heritage I’m sorry to say.
But good luck!
signed.
We cant save them all, and not all of them are of significance to justify saving alone on their history.
Aviation Heritage and ongoing Aviation activity are the two components needed to try and resist redevelopment.
But every one we loose is one lost forever.
An 11,000 signature petition in Australia in 1998 stopped the intended sell off and subdivision of Point Cook.
The arguments then were the same, the mighty dollar and the developers would overcome history and nostalgia.
15 years later its still there and its now the only airfield on the National Heritage List and about to celebrate its centenary, and today the RAAF Museum still has an active airbase with runways and moving aircraft outside its front door, as against its RAFM and RNZAFM brethren, and its built heritage is being retained and restored.
So despite the pessimism and expected outcome, its still worth making a stand and bringing the issue into the local public debate.

Mark Pilkington
