Hi,first time on this forum.Im one of the engineers at the Gatwick Aviation Museam,Im working on Our D.H. FB50 Venom,J1605.
While much of the work is progressing well,an area Im stuck on is,replacing the Cartridge starter with an Electric starter.
I know that it has been done so hope to speak to someone that has already carried out this modification.
Dave.

Got Me thinking,We do have an air start that We use to run the Bucaneer, though I still like the idea of an electric starter, much less fuss.

Yes, I recall that they went the compressed air route.
I think if you want to use the Comet starter, you have to change the whole top plate on the engine, which supports the starter, but I’m not sure what happens to the generators then!

And 15 mins later Stan probably answers your query! However you could alternatively try Dave Homewood who I am sure could put you in touch.

I will have to make a few enquiries but I understand the cartridge breech has been modified to take a lead from a compressed air bottle eg a dive cylinder. This is a relatively easy mod to do as the cartridge stater uses the high pressure gas generated by the slowburn cordite and this is now replaced by the compressed air.Hope this helps.

I have an ex Comet Ghost, tried the starter only 6 of the 8 studs line up,tried one from a Dart too,no luck.
Cartriges are out, this engine has not turned for 14 years,I want to be able to turn it gently and regularly to keep it nicely oiled.
I know that there is a starter out there that will fit, just got to find it.
The overall plan is to get this bird up to live runs and hopefully taxi it on Our strip, but one thing at a time.

There are plenty of cartridges around if you get stuck.
What you need is a starter for a Ghost Comet, but they are pretty scarce.
