Allo,
Been looking at some aircraft photos and noticed in several places what appears to be a manufacturers number. It’s prefixed with “Serial E of N/AS/”
I’ve also seen circular stamps with “E of N 18”.
Can anyone help me out with what they mean?

Bazy,
Googled earlier and found the same information. I’m inclined to think it is Elliots of Newbury but still confused as none of the official documentation I have states they built anything other than tailplane parts (and rudders only if the engineering notes are to be believed) and yet I’ve found an E of N stamp on several cockpit parts and clearly stencilled on the side of one being assembled in a photo.
Curious stuff.

From this website…
http://www.grunaubaby.nl/new_page_1.htm
ELLIOTTS OF NEWBURY LTD Elliotts of Newbury grew out of an old established joinery works that had existed on a part of the present site since the “nineteenth century. After the 1914-18 war a change to furniture manufacture was made which has continued to the present day. During the Second World War, however, Elliotts became involved with glider manufacture, one of a number of furniture manufacturers, including Harris Lebus Ltd., that co-operated in the building of the large transport gliders. Elliotts built about one third of the total Horsa production including the development of the hinged nose for the Mark 2 version, and it was also responsible for powered version of the Hamilcar glider.

EofN/AS must be Elliots with or for AS Airspeed maybe ??

I would imagine the circular stamp EofN18 is an inspection stamp of one Elliots inspectors ! although I am a little surprised it is not just EoN18 !

EoN also made complete gliders, albeit for the civilian market postwar. Lots of them.

Indeed they are but they’re from the cockpit and my sub-contractors list has Elliott’s of Newbury as only making tailplane components with three additional sub-contractors under them.
Just checked my records and Elliott’ss are indeed listed as making just the tailplane components between 22nd Oct. 1941 and 19th May 1943. They aren’t on the sub contractors list from November 1943 onwards.

Are they glider parts? if so E of N could be Elliots of Newbury
