V1 surviving parts

With few surviving complete V1s around, we’ve been thinking how many survive in component form. Are there any forum items out there that have any sections of V1, particularly forward section of engine components. I’d be very interested to learn more of the spring valves and general operating mechanisms

I believe that one’s a US-built JB-2 Loon – For all intents and purpose the same as the Argus AS-014.

For what I feel is more of the “real deal”, i.e. a German built version, although I don’t know how much it is made from original/modern parts, see this one:

V1 wing

Atatched are the pics I got in 2011 of what I was told was the V1 long range wing leading edge – pics are from the seller..

It was 2.2m long and I assume it was sold to someone at Speyer.

The V1 rudder I have at the moment was bought in Germany and was definitely painted in RLM76 on one side – just faded to a green colour over time

Wasn’t there a tunnel/cave uncovered a few years back, which contained the remains of many V1 flying bombs & V2 rockets, perhaps this is where a lot of the stuff that is appearing on ebay etc, has come from ?.

From my experience, based on the location of the sellers, much of the eBay (eBay.de) V1 engine parts appear to be from three main locations in Germany:
1. The tunnel complex at Mittelbau-Dora just outside Nordhausen.
2. Peenmunde test site.
3. One of the Reichenberg factories.

I have collected many Argus engine parts over the years, both from the above sources in Germany as well as from France, Belgium and England.
The French/Belgian parts have mainly been ground equipment associated with the V1 bomb preparation and launching.
The English-sourced parts have, according to the sellers, all been from V1 bomb-sites.

Having also collected a huge amount of wartime manufacturing documentation and manufacturing drawings on the Argus engine I have compared these with the parts received and have no doubt to believe that the parts are not genuine. This, IMO, is also confirmed by the extremely high quality of the diecast Klappenregister parts, fuel nozzles and other fuel system components.

It’s been interesting from an engineering perspective to collect these parts. For example, there are many manufacturing variations in the fuel nozzles. The Peenemunde and English-sourced fuel nozzles I have seen so far have all been made out of brass, i.e. from one of the “non-strategic materials” usually associated with the construction of the V1 bomb. Early versions also have very intricate spring return and shuttle mechanisms whilst later Schlick-types are far simpler with no moving parts. The Reichenberg factory-sourced Schlick-type nozzles have, on the other hand, been made from “aircraft-grade” alloy which, in typical German aircraft building fashion, have been anodized.

There was a lot of V1 and V2 stuff recovered from underground factories in the former east after the fall of the Berlin wall. Some of those exported to American collections have come from there – including both of the FHC examples.

In the mid-to late 1990s (I’m fairly certain I came across it first sometime between 1990 and 1993, and then once again visiting the area sometime after about 1997) there was a small scrapyard-cum-collection on a roadside in Kent. I have a feeling it was in the Biddenden area. I know I’ve mentioned it on here before, and I have a feeling other members have – it was easy to spot from the road as it had a small steam engine stood there, and a large radial engine busy turning into Daz. Under the roadside hedge was the complete power unit of a crashed V1, plus other parts that memory doesn’t identify any more.

Anyone else remember it, know where it was, what became of the stuff etc?

The Lashenden Air Warfare Museum at Headcorn holds the inlet valve matrix from an Argus 109 014 pulse jet amongst parts from over 30 V1’s. They will be placed on display in the new display building later this year with the museum’s restored Reichenberg.

Ah yes!

I knew that I knew where it was…but just couldn’t think!

Glad it has a good home. I recall collecting it on the roof of a Vauxhall Chevette. No roof rack. Just a mattress and lots of rope. Fortunately, the wing got home undamaged. Unfortunately, the Chevette was still undamaged, too.

Fouga, a brief explanation about the Mooney is contained in this news item on the NAM website http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=649 it is a long term project and I’m not sure that I could keep a dedicated thread active with information – the NAM briefing thread did have a mention about the project a few days ago – does this help?

There have been a few V1 rudders and elevators available – about 5 intact rudders in the last few years.

Most rudders have the push rod from the lower stbd side broken off.

I was tempted by an original wooden front edge of the wing from a Reichenberg for sale at Speyer but it was really quite long!

There used to be any number of V1 remains in the woods and countryside around here and we thought nothing of them and paid little interest. I have had several ram-jet tubes, compressed air spheres, main spars and the like over the years and also had a complete V1 wing that had been torn off by a balloon cable. That went to the collection of the late Ray Harvey who had a big V1 collection.

There was a fair bit of other aircraft stuff down there too, but mostly small sub assemblies; no complete aircraft.
