Hi everyone – new to Forum with a lovely Spit object I would like to know more about

Hi all, new on today. a bit of a history. I was in the ATC for many years, I have always been interested in flying and planes. In my time in 241 ATC I flew in and sometimes took control of Chipmunks, Bulldogs, Kirby Cadet gliders and even once won a flight in a Jet Provost at Church Fenton in a shooting comp.

I have an ulterior motive for joining initially. I have acquired a really nice example of a P8 compass in its original box. I know that it belonged to a pilot called Donald Hill who flew recon spitfires for 541 Squadron RAF Benson. I have a pic of him sitting on the tail of one of the Spitfires he flew.

It has A&M and Crown on the side and is brass, full of liquid and no bubbles or rusting inside or out. It is a lovely example with history.

If I was to decide to sell it, where would be best to advertise it and how much do you think it would be worth ?

Thanks in advance

Original spec was Light Admiralty Grey, which is a grey-green, not very far removed from cockpit grey-green (to my eyes, anyway.)

I use Humbrol Matt 27 – brush paint it on, let it dry, then wipe it with Mr Sheen – no-one will know the difference!

They should be painted, with the body in medium sea grey, and the top ring in black.

P8 compasses are quite common.

They should be painted, with the body in medium sea grey, and the top ring in black.

Value – somewhere between £50 and £100 or so.

ebay is as good a place as any to sell them.

Thanks Bruce, I will keep it in that case, it looks good in my cabinet next to a Bombsight B that I have had a good while. Thanks

Thanks Mark, one question I forgot to ask was whether anyone knew anything about the aircraft in the picture. Was it a Mk IX ? I was told by his son it was.

Yes. A Mk IX in post WWII livery.

That looks to be MA794 of the Empire Central Flying School some time between 1946 & 1949.
