I have been watching the old BBC series ‘Wings’ on Youtube, that is such a great series! I’d forgotten how good it is. I was a teenager last time I watched it back in the 1980’s and didn’t really appreciate it like I do now.
I seriously thing the BBC should and could do a new version of the series, not necessarily based on the same characters and stories but along the same lines, for the WWI 100th Anniversary. A new series on the RFC with all the WWI aircraft types around the UK now, flying and otherwise, plus the decent special effects that are now avaialble, they could do a superb job. Especially if they gave it a budget like Downton Abbey gets.
They could even film it in New Zealand if they had to, given how many rare and interesting WWI types are flying here these days.

You won’t find that happening on the BBC any time soon – everything the BBC does is driven by gender politics and as there were no female pilots at all in WW1 to work into the mix a snowball has more chance of surviving in hell than a series like Wings being remade.
I have a friend who works as a consultant for the BBC and this is a stone-cold fact!!

That would look great in formation with TVAL’s two BE2’s (on of which is a genuine WWI aeroplane, restored to flight)

Gets my vote 🙂
And as im sure you know the BE2 used originally for some of the flying scenes is still about and flying once more 🙂
I wonder who owns that ??????

Another very good series from the 70’s is Danger UXB…
Another good series…..I also remember it for a bit of female nudity on screen!
To my mind a few series like these would be an ideal way to get today’s younger generations educated about the history of the World Wars…
…got to be better than ‘Game of Thrones’ anyway!

I have the Danger UXB DVD set, a superb series. They just don’t make decent TV like these two shows, and the likes of Colditz and Secret Army, any more.

Yes, i remembered watching it as a teenager in the 70’s but now have it on DVD, a great series, some really good story lines, but then i suppose there were the veterans still about to give direction.
Another Very good series from the 70’s is Danger UXB, again the story lines are very true to what happened and very well portrayed. ( also available on DVD)
