Who will be the first to correctly identify this engine?
(Not open to anyone who knows me!)

Yes, they go the ‘right way up’, ie heads at the top. I don’t think they share any other obvious features with the DB engines.
It’s not an SAE50 shaft, it is very slightly smaller, but the number of splines are the same and it would work because the prop is centred between two cones. We would have to manufacture the cones and retaining nut to suit.

Nice looking engines, it will be nice to see something exotic running.

We have also discovered that a SAE 50 propeller fits it, which is handy!
Strange seeing a SAE standard quoted for a propeller (spline)!
By the way, which way is โupโ on this engine? Your photographs give us both options and considering the DB600 โheritageโ of this engine it could go either way…
…my guess is valves at the top (water-pump at the bottom).

Just what I would have guessed!
Off topic, I’m over on your side of the pond, in Muskoka, working on Miss Canada IV for two weeks.

Any more pic’s of the rest of the engine then MerlinPete?:)

We haven`t found anything yet to put us off!
We have everything we really need. we have to accept that we probably won`t locate any magnetos, but have taken measurements and we can fit British mags if needs be.
One of the engines has been used to power a boat as it has a water-cooled exhaust manifold. I don`t know if this was a one off or a military application?

Anyway, the Daimler-Benz guesses were certainly what I would have said too. The engine is a Mikulin AM42, but the valve gear is a pure unadulterated and identical copy of the DB 600 series roller rocker assembly.
The photo is as is was when we removed the cover, the discolouration is due to water having been in there.
Hopefully in quite a long time we should have one of them running. (There are two).Pete

Blimey, I didn`t know it was even on our web site! I should pay attention more often.

Those roller tappets are beautiful though, how common is/was that?
Rollers are used on the Allison V-1710 cam-followers.

DB 606 or 610 Double engine.

My guess was based on the fact that you are a renowned Merlin man. (And I believe that our paths may cross in the next year or so). So I went RR.
Those roller tappets are beautiful though, how common is/was that? I have never seen anything that elegant before.
I’d still like to know how you achieved that yellowy patina though!

Mikulin AM42 – saw one of these sectioned at Szolnok last summer & was surprised at the design.
