Duxford Airshows

This is commercial and it is posted in the Historic section as I think it will be most relevant to people here. Moderators if I’m breaking any rules or posting in the wrong place then please move or delete.

I work for a Cambridgeshire based bus company and from Monday we will be taking over the running of a local bus service in the Duxford area – route 7A. The service runs from Hinxton to Heathfields (the estate on the west end of the road which runs past the museum at Duxford), Whittlesford train station, Sawston and Babraham Road park and ride.

I’m currently undertaking a complete re-work of the existing timetable which we hope to get approved by the local council (who support the service) shortly.

There is currently a limited Saturday service operated on the route which does not serve Whittlesford train station and finnishes at just after 3 in the afternoon.

I seem to remember hearing forum members talking about walking backwards and forwards to the train station and/or The Red Lion pub on airshow days and my thoughts are that as we will have a bus ‘in the area’ on airshow days it maybe worth our while registering an out and back service between Whittlesford train station and Heathfields on the Saturdays of airshows or major events at Duxford. The bus would probably leave Whittlesford train station about 1030am and return about 1730pm and perhaps cost £3 return?

What I am looking for here is peoples honest observations of what they think the likely demand would be? If you have done the walk, was there a steady stream of others or were you the only one on the platform when you got there? Would you be likely to use it and how often? What would you be prepared to pay? Would you use it if it was extended to Babraham Road park and ride site (bearing in mind we would have to charge and the existing services to other sites are free). Is there already some kind of service in place that I do not know of?

This is a geniue chance to add a new service for airshow goers, but I don’t want to lose the boss a whole lot of cash and make myself look even more stupid than normal!! 😀

I’m also interested to hear how many people might use it on a Sunday.
