Does anybody know if any examples of the Rheintochter R1 Surface to Air missile were brought to the UK after WW2? An airman based at North Coates with No17 JSTU in the mid 1960s claims that a missile with polished wooden wings was stored in a blister hangar near the bomb dump during his time there. It seems it was not being looked after, just stored. It was removed whilst he was on leave and the hangar was demolished shortly afterwards. despite enquiries nobody knew or was prepared o say where it had gone. The only missile that springs to mind with polished wooden wings (or flying surfaces) is the Rheintochter R1.

The RAF Museum has an R1 – at Cosford – and an R3 – on loan to DTM Berlin – so it might be one of these – presumably transiting through the missile museum at RAF Newton
