Back in August 1999 I visited the museum collection then at Sandown.
I never seem to have identified two of the displayed aircraft.
One was a Fieseler Fi103, the other was the wreckage of a Bell P-39.
Does anyone know their identities please? Also, what happened to them when the museum closed.
Thanks,
Andy

Any idea where the P-39 ended up?

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like the P-39 is destined to remain an unknown.

Hi Andy,
According to Lost Aviation Collections of Britain the P-39 was unidentified, out of Russia and exported to the USA in 2000. It only mentions the Fi-103 briefly in a postscript stating that a V-1 doodlebug was displayed from 1998 till closure. The collection was called the Island Aeroplane Company and The Front Line Aviation Museum.

Whilst at Sandown never did find a positive ID for the P-39, just the first three digits ‘220’ on the fin. It departed to the USA in June 2000, not sure where. The photo shows it ‘propped’ up with sticks for a photo shoot in 1999.
The Fi103 just a static replica, possibly the example now on show at Weybourne, Norfolk according to Wrecks & Relics.
Despite the museum being closed for some 10 years or more, to this day unsuspecting tourists still turn up at Sandown, looking for the place. Such is the power of the internet and the continued listing of the place in various on-line visitor guides!
