Spade grip research

Prior to AC part and Ser numbers on later grips, Dunlop used a different system for spade grips AH…. and serial numbers.
Early spade grips have the number stamped on the stock of the brake lever mount. Spit and Hurris used ‘CG……’

Sounds sad, but I would like to compile a list….not sure where it would be of use, but might help us say an AH2040 might have been fitted to such and such an aircraft.

To start with, may try out AH2040s….so need the CG number and an idea of how old – if ally or mag alloy and history if known. You can post here or pm me. Any list would not say who owns what or anything like that

Hi Tony,

I have CCG247(?) on a Canadian AH2040. The (?) may be a fourth number but it is too worn to tell.

Is the extra C in the CCG prefix a reliable clue to the grip’s origin?

I think so

Any CG is obscured, covered in blobby black paint perhaps or never there so no idea if any use to you? It does have four numbers on the brake mount, 5661. I think magnesium (it’s a dark powdery metal) and apparently from a Swordfish. Dats all I know….

Rocketeer,

Have you got a copy of the spade grip publication compiled by Air Ministry?
