Zodiacchris

I reckon with that amount of original content you well qualify for ‘historic’ status. I’ve heard it said that some ‘historic’ aircraft qualify only because they’ve had a rag dipped in Castrol R waved over them !

K5054

Thanks!

I thought so, otherwise something would have popped up when I googled 5054 replica. I’ll order the paint then…:D

And yes, this is off-topic and we’ll say no more! Despite the original pitot tube and mast, the switches and the spade grip, my baby is not historic…

Cheers,
Chris

Actually, I inteneded to write, that the Spitfire only was a ‘niche’ aircraft for the USAAF, given the predominant use of US aircraft by the Americans…

While I have the soap box, here is a question:

Does anybody know if a replica of the K5054 Spitfire prototype is currently flying anywhere??

I’d like to finish my MK25 as K5054 in cerulean blue…

Cheers,
Chris

There was, back in the 1990s, but so far as I’m aware, there isn’t another replica flying in those colours.

Doesn’t this belong in General Aviation?

I agree. Its not exactly historic aviation.

This is the best-looking example of the 26B that I’ve seen so far….

She is a gorgeous machine, I agree completely! Richmond, the owner, worked closely with the RNZAF paint crews who painted the ex-Burma Mk.IX PV270 to ensure the correct colours. Sadly she had a landing incident last year but hopefully will be rebuilt: http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/news/plane-lands-wheels/1563839/ and the full story http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/news/spitfire-crash-landing/1564350/

….’nice a/c for the USAAF…?

Yes, nice for PR and certainly nice for USAAF bomber crews surrounded by escort duty Spits.

Monoplane, doesn’t it make you wonder about the rest of the claims when they quote such figures? At a guess you would think a modern computor controlled fuel injected V8 of that power would use maybe 70 or 80 litres an hour at 65%? A comparative aero engine, say a 540 Lyc developing 300 HP would use up to 100 litres an hour or more at full noise and the Texan mob claim 30 litres an hour for similar power?
About the only American homebuild/kit aircraft that come close to manufactures claims are the RV series of machinery.
And yes we are starting to take after the Amerrycarn way of exaggeration and overblowing instead of the traditional understated conservative approach of the Poms letting actions speak for themselves. 🙁

Typical yankee spec’s, they quote a fuel flow of 30 litres an hour for a
460 HP V8 at 65% power? Pretty good figures but then again they are the greatest nation in the known universe. 😀

Hold on, Mike is one of ours – the absolutely top nation in the world AUSTRALIAN, we aren’t broke like you Europeans or the USA – financed by the Chinese – living off past glories.

When it comes to talking crap, we can match the best of them

cheers

Nice, but a long way from the real thing…

Hi guys,

The Supermarine kitplanes are nice, but still a long way from the real thing. I am building the early MK25 single seater, and they are brilliant for a homebuilt plane, great looks, retractable gear etc.
But specifically the later two seaters have somewhat lost the looks, the wings to small, the fuselage to fat, and weird looking cockpit/canopy area, with a macrocephalitic look. And that the former “Australian Spitfire” is now the ‘Texan Spitfire’ is a bit sad, but given the stupidly high Australian dollar inevitable. Just seeing all those Spits with Stars and Bars seems a bit weird, they were only ever a nice aircraft for the USAAF.

That said, they are still great aircraft, and better than not Spitfire at all 😀

And yes, I’m from Oz, too.

Chris

Typical Brit. Didn’t read the website and blames it on the Yanks. It’s an Australian who moved his operation to Texas.

Typical American, didn’t read the poster’s location. 😉

Apparently they’ve received a large order recently. 120, to be painted in SEAC markings and delivered to Rangoon. 🙂

The best of the best. I hope it inspires the Brits.
