Hi all;
Just stumbled across a thread over on Hyperscale that may be of interest here. Seems as though the next HBO WW2 mini-series from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is going to cover the 8th Air Force and not the Pacific fighter groups. This could be very good indeed!

They already did, apparently they released the same film under 2 names: Tuskegee Airmen (?) & Red Tails. I’ve seen both films & couldn’t tell them apart.
Same story totally different films. The Tuskegee Airmen is the 1995 HBO TV movie and far better than Redtails.

We’ve sailed, Pacific, we’ve walked, Band of Brothers, we’ve done bombers, – Memphis Bell; – time for the fighters and it should be Tumult in the Clouds, – Goodson’s epic! It covers everything!!!

IIRC Spielberg’s grandfather was on B-17’s so I thought this might happen…does anyone remember the mini tale when the cartoonist drew a main wheel on a B-17 which saved the ball turret gunner?
Spielberg’s father, Arnold, (not grandfather) was a radio operator on B25’s in the Burma/India theatre. 490th BS.

I never got around to seeing The Pacific, though. Was it any good?
I didn’t think it was as good as Band of Brothers, which was special in my opinion, but you will enjoy it all the same. Well worth picking up if you can. 🙂

I was crewing C47 N47FK during Band Of Brothers and working with all the guys was a privilage this latest production is sure to be fab and maybe could help Elly and Sally B out as did Memphis Belle.

I’ll look forward to this one with interest.
Maybe the French B-17 could come out of semi-retirement as well?

Not much use using a recently closed RAF base..Cottesmore/Wittering etc look far too modern. With a bit of imagination Linton is pretty standard still, as is Barkston Heath. My favourite would probably be somewhere like Bicester – what a great way to kickstart its preservation!

Excellent, I was beginning to think that I had imagined seeing that film! Thanks TT!
As for Spielberg and Hanks, the Mighty Eighth are an obvious choice- I look forward to it.

Well there will be plenty to choose from. North Weald done well for Band of Brothers or maybe a recently closed RAF base.
We will have to see what happens. I’m hoping that they don’t go OTT with CGI.

It will be fantastic to give the Band of Brothers style treatment to the 8th Air Force. Wonder how long it will be before we get to see it on our screens?
It’s got me thinking though…If filmed in the UK, I wonder what a good candidate would be for an airfield location?

Yeah the Spitfire saga could be turned into a film itself!
Well I was not surprised to hear that they were going to do this project.
I think it will be along the same vein as Band of Brothers. Focusing on several different crews of bombers and hopefully fighters.
And if its based on the 8th Air force we can only hope its filmed in the UK!
Imagine that we may have several B17’s, B25’s, Mustangs and Thunderbolts all painted the same colours.
We can only hope !

rafmatt;
I didn’t think this was going to draw a comment…seems to be a preoccupation with elusive buried Spitfires!
I’m surprised to hear that this has switched from the rumour of the series following the fortunes of a Pacific based fighter unit to an 8th AF bomber unit…But it should be very good. Could we possibly get the air war film we’ve all been waiting for??

Sounds good!
Are we about to see the UK host loads of 8th Airforce aircraft like they did for the filming of Memphis Belle?
We can only hope!
